Bruce Harbeson Memorial endowed scholarship

The Bruce Harbeson Memorial Endowed Scholarship at Hanover College continues to grow and support deserving students. It will soon be awarded to Bruce's sixth student recipient for the 2024-25 school year!  Proceeds from this year's golf outing will again go directly to the scholarship fund, ensuring that your support will have an impact on future Harbeson Scholarship recipients. Whenever possible, the scholarship will be granted to a student from southern Indiana, with special consideration given to graduates of Bruce’s alma mater, Providence (Ind.) High School.

Who was BRUCE HARBESON?

Bruce was a great husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, uncle, friend, leader, and coach.

He was an outstanding student-athlete at Providence High School and Hanover College, excelling in both the classroom and on the field of play. At Providence, he led the ’71 Pioneer football team to a then-school-record season from his quarterback position. In baseball, he led the Pioneers to a 14-game winning streak as the team’s shortstop and 24-5 overall record. He was a great captain and leader both on and off the field. At Hanover, he continued the same skills, leading the football team to 26 consecutive regular-season wins as the starting QB and captain.

Hanover was ranked his final 3 seasons and finished in the top 4 in the country during his junior and senior campaigns. He was the MVP and 1st team All-Conference and All-District QB as a Junior and Senior.  In Baseball, Bruce was a 4-year starter at shortstop leading the Panthers to the playoffs and, as in football, was the team MVP.  He was also the recipient of the Scholar-Athlete Award at Hanover as well as a member of Hanover’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

After graduation, Bruce continued his athletic pursuits coaching summer baseball at the high school level while enjoying competing in tennis (he was an excellent USTA performer), golf, and enjoying water skiing.

When Bruce returned to Southern Indiana, he immediately joined the junior high coaching staff at Providence and then moved up to coach the quarterbacks at the high school. He touched so many lives, young and old, with his soft-spoken ways and great knowledge of sports.

Bruce was a great player and coach, and an even better person!
