Dr. Paul Blume was a vital part of Hanover College for 3.5 decades. He was a well-known professor of Economics from 1968 through 2001. He changed many lives through his teaching and left an impact on generations of Hanoverians. Throughout the decades he was not only known for his role as a professor, but also someone who looked out for the campus and its community. In 1974, he stopped class and led students to shelter from one of the College’s most devastating natural disasters, the tornado of 1974, which he later documented with his personal photography. In 1975, he was the 7th recipient of the Arthur and Ilene Baynham Outstanding Teaching Award. He received the award again in 1988. Three years after his retirement, he successfully secured a Lilly Grant to kick-start the Center for Business Preparation, now known as the Business Scholars Program at Hanover College. He has truly lived Hanover’s mission of lifelong inquiry, transformative learning, and meaningful service and helped many others—students, colleagues, and community members—to do the same.
A legacy of such power should be preserved, and the best way to preserve it is to ensure that future Hanoverians can continue to pursue a high-quality liberal arts education under the guidance of Hanover’s faculty.
It is this premise that has led Paul Ratterman ’78, Kellie Sheryak ’83, and many of his students to lead the charge of establishing the Paul Blume Endowed Scholarship in Economics, which will benefit a Hanover student majoring or minoring in economics. If Dr. Blume had a impact on your life, please consider making a gift of $250 or more in support of the scholarship and attending the dinner on November 15th, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. All proceeds from the dinner will support the scholarship.
